Maintenance

Here are few things you can do to keep your computer running smoothly...

Note: It is a good idea to perform these tasks weekly.

Scan Disk and Defrag – Scan Disk will scan for any file or folder errors on your computer. Defrag will put all fragmented files back into the order they’re supposed to be in.

Disk Defrag - Start by cliking on the Start Menu/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defrag. Then click on “Defragment.”. Make sure your Screen Saver is turned off.

Disk Defrag

ChkDsk – This fixes errors when you restart your PC. You will need to access the command prompt to run ChkDsk. Just click on the Start Menu/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt. A window with a black screen will appear. Just type ChkDsk and hit enter. Windows will check for any errors. If there are any, it will ask you to restart. Just say “yes” and the computer will do the rest.

Disk Cleanup – This will remove all old compressed and unnecessary files from your computer. Double click My Computer, right click your C: drive and select properties. Then select the Disk Cleanup button at the bottom. First let it scan. Once it scans all the files need to be deleted, put a check mark next to them and click “OK” at the bottom. The computer will do the rest.

Windows Update – This will install Service Packs and Patches that your computer will need.Just open up Internet Explorer, click on Tools at the top and select Windows Update at the top. This takes you to Microsoft’s Update website. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: Critical updates are the most important updates to download and install. Depending on what you download you may have to restart your computer several times.
